NORFOLK, VA- The Lady Pirates remain undefeated after pulling off a five-set 3-2 (25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 26-28, 15-13) win at Norfolk State tonight. Hampton Volleyball has not started a season off with three consecutive wins since 2014.
"This game was a big representation of our mental preparation and team effort," said head coach Sonja Maksimovac. "Great win for the Lady Pirates; they pushed each other until the end. The team chemistry and limiting our mistakes brought us this win."
Leaderboard: Outside Hitter Gabby Calloway led the game in Kills finishing with 16. Setter Julieta Campana ended the match, recording a new personal best with 44 assists. Leanna Caldwell led the Pirates in Digs, recording 14, and Genevieve Reynolds led the Pirates' defense in blocks with five.
"We outworked Norfolk State by fighting relentlessly and keeping the team chemistry up until the end," said Campana.
Score: 3-2 (25-16, 19-25, 25-20, 26-28, 15-13)
Hampton went blow for blow with the Spartans to get another win under their belts in an all-out nail bitter. The Pirates showed a lot of poise tonight playing against their longtime Battle of the Bay rival on NSU's home court. Hampton's ability to play through the Spartans home court advantage crowd in a close fifth set proved to be pivotal in tonight's win.
Hampton saw its best hitting percentage in the opening set at .308, while the Spartans struggled, hitting a -.042. However, at the end of the night, the Spartans finished hitting .204 to Hamptons .181.
"Tonight we left our hearts out on the court," said Calloway. "I don't think anyone had anything left to give and that is why we came out on top. We gave everything and fought until the end."
How It Happened:
Set 1: Campana wasted no time putting the Pirates on the scoreboard with a service-ace to start the set, followed by kills from Clark and Clara Smith to give Hampton a 3-0 lead. After an 8-1 run, a few miscues by the Pirates helped NSU get going. Hampton outscored Norfolk 12-6, closing out the set with a service ace from Caldwell to secure the 25-16 finish.
Set 2: Norfolk bounced back and took control of the second set with a 5-0 run. The Pirates fought back with a 5-1 run to make it a single-point game, 6-5 trailing NSU. The Pirates regrouped and made a 4-0 run at the end to hold the Spartans off, but it wasn't enough to come back; NSU claimed the set 25-19.
Set 3: Both teams exchanged points to open the set off of kills. After the early tie, the Pirates jumped in the driver's seat and remained in control of the set until the end. Hampton used a 7-1 run, highlighted by three service aces, to create a scoring gap. The Spartans made it a two-point game down the stretch, but Hampton still came away with the set 25-20
Set 4: Both teams played with a sense of urgency down the stretch in set four. Hampton used a 5-0 run to claim an 11-5 lead, but with the home court crowd in their back pocket, NSU battled back, determined to make it a game. The set endured five ties before Norfolk was able to claim the set 28-26.
Set 5: Hampton and Norfolk State continued to put on a show playing neck and neck from start to finish in the final set. Like the fourth set, the final set also endured a series of three ties, but Hampton managed to come away with match-winning the final set 15-13.
NEXT UP: The Pirates continue their road play and enter CAA conference play against Towson on Saturday, September 17th at 1 PM in Towson, MD.
