HAMPTON, Va. (Aug. 11, 2026) … Former Hampton University football player Keith Burgess has passed away. Burgess was a wide receiver for the Pirates in the 1980s where he played under Head Coach Ed Wyche. Burgess helped lead the Pirates to an 8-2 record in 1981.
 
He hauled in a 77-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Kevin Joiner in a 31-6 Homecoming win over Guilford on Oct 30, 1981. It is the sixth longest pass reception in Hampton history.
 
A memorial is scheduled for 10:30 am on Monday, Aug. 17 at Spring Creek Baptist Church (5130 Woolridge Rd., Moseley, Va.) and a repass to follow at 1:00 pm at Ivy League Event Center (3549 Courthouse Rd., Richmond, Va.).
