Willie Phillips came to Hampton after working at Elizabeth City State where he served as assistant director of athletics and head athletic trainer for the Vikings. At Hampton, Phillips is the head football athletic trainer for the Pirates.

He worked as an athletic trainer at Tolbert Center for Rehabilitation and Wellness in Encino, Calif., from 2010-11 before becoming an athletic trainer at Cumberland from 2011-16 where he provided coverage for 200 student-athletes on the wrestling, swimming, tennis, and volleyball teams.

He moved to the Huntersville Health and Rehabilitation Center in 2016 as head of the athletic training department. From 2017-18, he worked at Queens as an assistant athletic trainer before moving to Elizabeth City State. A native of Oakland, Calif., Phillips received his A.A. degree from Chalbot before earning a bachelor's degree in athletic training from California State Northridge before obtaining a master's degree in kinesiology from Fresno Pacific. He is a member of NATA, CATA, MAATA, and SEATA.
