Ashlee Finley

Ashlee Finley is entering her fourth year as assistant coach with the Hampton University women’s basketball program after spending a year as a graduate assistant for her alma mater. Finley’s responsibilities include developing the Lady Pirates’ post players, recruiting and academic coordination.

The 2012-13 season saw two of Hampton’s post players lead the team to 28 wins and a fourth straight MEAC Tournament title. Senior forward Keiara Avant was named the MEAC Player of the Year, leading the conference in rebounding and ranking fifth in scoring, while junior forward Alyssa Bennett was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year.

Avant ranked 10th in the nation in double-doubles last season, while Bennett’s length and athleticism allowed her to shut down opposing players, regardless of position. Bennett was the third MEAC Defensive Player of the Year to come from Hampton in the last four seasons.

In 2011-12, Finley helped develop Avant into one of the MEAC’s most aggressive post players and relentless rebounders. Avant led the team and was sixth in the MEAC in rebounding last season, pulling down 7.9 boards per game.

Under Finley’s guidance in 2010-11, senior forward Quanneisha Perry was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, becoming the first player in conference history to do so, while leading the MEAC in rebounding with 9.0 per game. Finley also saw transfer Sherena Abercrumbia turn into a reliable post presence off the bench as the season progressed.

Finley played four years for the Lady Pirates as a guard and a post player, establishing her presence on the defensive end and on the boards. In 119 career games, Finley averaged 6.9 points per game and 5.8 rebounds a contest. She also had 154 career steals, an average of 1.3 per contest.

Her career high on 19 points came Nov. 11, 2007 at St. Louis, and Finley pulled down a career-high 13 rebounds on Jan. 12, 2008 against Bethune-Cookman. She also had a career-high six steals twice, most recently Jan. 13, 2007 against Morgan State.

Finley, a two-time team captain, led the Lady Pirates in rebounding in 2006-07, averaging 6.9 boards a contest.

Finley, a native of Harrisburg, Pa., received her bachelor’s degree in business administration in 2009 and is currently pursuing a counseling degree in graduate school.
