The hiring reunites Head Coach Tamisha Augustin with her former coach at Alabama A&M. Holt served as an assistant coach for the Lady Bulldogs during Augustin’s playing career at Alabama A&M. He was named as Associate Head Coach prior to the 2024-25 season opener.

Holt comes to Hampton after two seasons at UMBC. While with the Retrievers, he was involved in all facets of coaching including scouting, game preparations and recruiting. He spent a year as the head coach at Harris-Stowe in St. Louis, Mo., after working as an assistant coach at Alabama State for five seasons.

In his first season at Hampton, the Pirates provided a glimpse of the future as the Pirates knocked off another Power Four school en route to a solid opening campaign. On December 1, 2024, Hampton took on SEC member Georgia and came out with a 76-74 overtime win on a Tyra Kennedy floater at the horn. Hampton had first-time wins over CAA opponents Stony Brook, Towson and Northeastern.

At Alabama State, he helped lead the Hornets to a runner-up finish at the 2021 SWAC Tournament. He was instrumental in recruiting five first-team and three second-team All-SWAC honorees and assisted with the development of Brittany Wright, the 2017 SWAC Player of the Year.

Holt spent 23 seasons at Alabama A&M working with both the men’s and women’s teams. He began his coaching career in 1993 as a student assistant under head coach Vann Pettaway before being promoted to a full-time assistant. He helped coach the team to three regional championships and three consecutive NCAA Elite Eight appearances (1993-96).

While at Alabama A&M, Holt recruited two SWAC Player of the Year honorees: Katrich Williams (2010) and Whiquitta Tobar (2012), as well as six first-team and four second-team All-SWAC honorees. After 11 years on the women’s coaching staff, he moved back to the men’s side as an assistant until 2016.

Holt was a standout player for legendary Coach Jerry Dugan at Lee High in Huntsville, Ala. He played two seasons at Snead State Community College in Boaz, Ala. Under Gid Riddle and Craig Roden. He earned a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications and general business from Alabama A&M in 1996 while pursuing his coaching career. He earned a master’s degree in management from Argosy in 2015.

Holt, and his wife, Tabatha, have two children: Diamond Samoan and Dexter Jr. (DJ).
