HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University women's basketball team will return home in search of its eighth straight win on Saturday, as they take on Bethune-Cookman at the HU Convocation Center at 4 p.m.
The Lady Pirates (19-6, 11-1 MEAC), in their second season under head coach David Six, picked up their seventh straight win with a 74-66 win over North Carolina A&T on Monday. Junior guard Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) led the way with a career-high 22 points, while junior guard Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) added 15 points and five assists. Sophomore forward Keiara Avant (Chesapeake, Va.) scored 14 points and junior forward Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) added 13 points.
Bethune-Cookman (12-11, 6-5 MEAC) had its Monday contest against Maryland Eastern Shore suspended in the second half due to unsportsmanlike conduct; Bethune-Cookman was leading 32-21 when play was stopped. The Lady Wildcats won their last game on Saturday, beating Delaware State 55-50 behind senior forward Sarah Bolden's 29 points and 13 rebounds.
Hampton is 19-7 all-time against Bethune-Cookman, having won six of the last eight meetings, even though the Lady Wildcats beat the Lady Pirates 55-51 on Jan. 22 in Daytona Beach, Fla. The Lady Pirates took two of three meetings last season, including a 58-38 win in the MEAC Tournament semifinals. Hampton won the first-ever meeting 73-67 on Jan. 2, 1997, going on to win 10 of the first 12 meetings. Bethune-Cookman has never won more than two straight over Hampton – a 75-56 decision on Feb. 5, 2005 and a 77-71 defeat on Feb. 3, 2006. Hampton is 11-0 against Bethune-Cookman at the HU Convocation Center.
Prior to Monday's game at North Carolina A&T, the Lady Pirates had gone 11 straight games without giving up 60 points, including back-to-back games in which they had given up a season-low 29 points against Delaware State and Maryland Eastern Shore. Hampton gave up just 45.4 points per game in that span, compiling a 10-1 record, and the Lady Pirates lead the MEAC and sit 12th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 53.3 points a contest this season. Hampton is also first in the MEAC in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to 36.6 percent shooting.
The Lady Wildcats went 17-15 last season, finishing sixth in the MEAC with a mark of 9-7 before falling to Hampton in the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament. Bethune-Cookman returns five starters from last year's squad, as well as seven letterwinners, and the Lady Wildcats were picked to finish fifth in the MEAC, picking up one first-place vote.
Senior guard Demetria Frank leads the team in scoring, pouring in 15.4 points per game to go along with 6.1 rebounds per contest, while sophomore guard Jasmine Elum is averaging 13.2 points per contest. Senior guard Jasmine Daniels is averaging 10.4 points per game. Bolden is pulling down a team-high 6.8 rebounds per game.
The Lady Wildcats are averaging 56.7 points per game on offense, while giving up 58.4 points per night.
After beating North Carolina Central 79-44 on Feb. 7, the Lady Pirates are 9-2 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season. The Lady Pirates were 10-3 at the HU Convocation Center last season, winning their last seven home contests. Hampton went 7-1 at home in MEAC games last season, and Six is 19-5 in his career as a head coach at home.
