NORFOLK, Va. – Hampton went on the road for the first time in the 2021 season and dropped a 47-7 decision at Old Dominion in front of 18,363 at Kornblau Field at S.B. Ballard Stadium on Saturday night.
On the second possession of the third quarter Hampton got on the board with a 24-yard touchdown pass from
Jett Duffey to
Jadakis Bonds as Hampton trailed 41-7 with 4:20 left. The drive went 75 yards in seven plays with
Elijah Burris covering 28 yards in three carries and Duffey hitting all four of his pass attempts for 47 yards.
ODU scored on its first possession as Eric Davis capped off a 91-yard drive with a seven-yard run for a 7-0 lead with 9:22 left. The Monarchs added a 24-yard field goal by Nick Rice as Hampton forced a 24-yard field goal at the 4:55 mark to give the hosts a 10-0 lead after one quarter.
DJ Mack got the Monarchs back on the board with a 13-yard scoring run on the second play of the second quarter to push the advantage to 17-0. Mack found Isaiah Spencer on a two-yard scoring pass to take the lead to 24-0 with 9:32 left in the half. He pushed the lead to 31-0 after a two-yard run with 3:15 left in the half. Rice closed the half with an 18-yard field goal for a 34-0 advantage.
In the fourth quarter, Rice hit his third field goal of the game with a 22-yarder to give ODU (1-1) a 44-7 lead with 14:19 left. He hit a 35-yard field goal at the 10:44 mark to lead 47-7.
Jaren Rainey topped the defense with 12 tackles, while
Caleb Brown added eight. Both had a pass breakup as the Pirates swatted eight passes. Bonds caught five passes for 68 yards, while
Elijah Burris was the leading rusher with 45 yards on 12 carries. Duffey was 7-of-16 for 83 yards and the one touchdown.
Hampton goes on the road next to take on Howard in the Truth & Service Classic at Audi Field on Saturday at noon.
