HAMPTON, Va. (October 24, 2026) … Hampton University celebrated its 98th Homecoming before an audience of 7,992 and thousands more in the adjoining campus parking lots. No. 18-ranked Monmouth (6-2, 4-0) pulled away in the second half to register a 49-13 victory over Hampton (1-7, 0-4).
The game also marked the first contest at the renovated Armstrong Stadium. The Pirates played their first three games at the City of Hampton's Darling Stadium while the artificial turf and surrounding track were replaced at Armstrong Stadium.
"We played hard on both offense in defense in the first half," said head coach Van Malone. "I loved our elevated energy and enthusiasm but we have to manage the third quarter better and make adjustments. We have to be locked in and be more consistent."
True freshman Xavier Brookins made the first start of his career at quarterback for the Pirates. He finished 9-of-16 passing for 49 yards. Tre'Von Taylor also saw action completing 6-of-10 passes for 97 yards including a touchdown.
After a scoreless first quarter, Monmouth's offense engineered a long drive. A Pirate punt gave Monmouth the ball at the one-yard line. The Hawks drove 99 yards in 18 plays culminating in the game's first score. Frankie Weaver connected with a wide-open Kenny Smith Jr. on an 11-yard touchdown pass to put the Hawks up 7-0 with 10:07 left before halftime.
Hampton responded when Donovan Shepard broke loose and dashed 76 yards before being dragged down at the one-yard line. Brookins bulled in from there as the Pirates tied the score 7-7 with 7:49 left in the second quarter.
Monmouth mounted a drive in the closing minutes of the first half to go ahead 14-7 at intermission. Running back Nazir Treadwell lined up at quarterback, took the snap and scored from one-yard out.
Monmouth amassed 242 yards in the first half as Weaver clicked on 19-24 passes for 164 yards. The Pirates accumulated 126 total yards.
The Hawks scored on their first five possessions of the second half to pull away. Tra Neal's eight-yard pass from Weaver followed by Weaver's five-yard TD pass to Garrett made it 28-7 after three quarters.
Monmouth's Elijah Jennings one-yard run in the opening minute of the fourth quarter upped the score to 35-7. Smith tallied his second touchdown on the day after breaking through the Hampton line and rambling 70 yards to put the Hawks ahead 42-7.
The Pirates mounted a drive and moved the ball that resulted in a score when seventh-year tight end T.K. Paisant hauled in a 13-yard pass from Brookins with 8:24 left. The two-point conversation attempt failed making the score 42-13.
Monmouth closed out the scoring driving 73 yards in 10 plays scoring on a three-yard run by Greg Randall to make the final score 49-13.
Monmouth amassed 565 yards offense while the Pirates had 249 yards. The Hawks dominated the time of possession 36:31-23:29. After struggling with penalties in the early season, the Pirates were whistled for just three infractions for 27 yards against the Hawks.
The Pirates play at Towson (0-8, 0-4) on Halloween with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
