Lady Pirates Start Road Trip With a Loss to Delaware

NEWARK, Del. (Oct. 19, 2023) Hampton University women's soccer team began their final road trip of the 2023 season against the Blue Hens of Delaware. With the Lady Pirates advancing into UD's final third, HU found the back of the net. With Delaware's 29 shots on goal, UD prevailed 9-1.

How it Happened

Senior Olexia Mitchell was tested early on the match facing three shots in the opening minute. With Mitchell facing continuous pressure from the Blue Hens, UD found the back of the net to go up 1-0. Before the match hit the 30-minute mark, Delaware scored two more times growing their advantage. HU developed a strong chance during this stretch, but the Lady Pirates were called offsides.

After Hampton's offense had a slow start to the match, Keri Geter was able to provide the Lady Pirates first shot of the match. On a corner kick Geter found space inside the penalty box. However, her attempt would be corralled by the Blue Hens goalkeeper. While Delaware produced four more shots before the end of the half, the Lady Pirates still found themselves trailing by four.

Coming out of the half Zaria Ascue was able to produce another shot for Hampton. In the second half, the Lady Pirates were able to surpass their first-half total with four shots. Delaware's offense continued to roll during the final 45 minutes. The Blue Hens found the back of the net six more times.

During the 69th minute of the match, Hampton was able to score. Sophomore Patricia Wharton scored her second goal of the season. Wharton found herself with a one-on-one opportunity with the incredible pass from Zaria Ascue. This would be Ascue's first assist of the 2023 campaign and of her collegiate career.
