HAMPTON, Va. (July 21, 2026) — Hampton Legends Weekend, Aug. 27-29, will close with a new twist this year: with ongoing work to replace the football field's turf at Hampton University's Armstrong Stadium, the Pirates' season opener will be played at nearby Darling Stadium — a venue with deep ties to the city itself, as the home field for all four Hampton city high schools.

To mark the occasion, Hampton University Athletics and the City of Hampton today announced the community initiative, a special partnership bringing the city into Legends Weekend as the Pirates take the field just off campus for their first two home games of the season.

"During this period of construction, we are excited to move our first two home games to Darling Stadium and create a community day atmosphere that brings the City of Hampton even closer to Hampton University," said Anthony D. Henderson, Sr., Director of Intercollegiate Athletics. "This is about more than a venue change — it is about celebrating our fans, our neighbors, and our shared pride in making Hampton University the City of Hampton's team."

"Everybody knows that you can't think of Hampton, Virginia, without thinking of Hampton University. That's a bond that has roots as strong as the Emancipation Oak," said Mayor Jimmy Gray. "So it only makes sense that we would think of the Hampton Pirates as the City's Team, and it only makes sense that the City's Team would be able to play some games at the City's field, Darling Stadium. As part of Community Initiative, special ticket pricing will be available for City of Hampton residents and staff with valid ID. Additional details on the offer will be announced in the coming weeks.

Hampton Legends Weekend kicks off Thursday, Aug. 27 with the annual golf tournament, followed by the Hall of Fame induction ceremony Friday, Aug. 28, and closes Saturday, Aug. 29 with the Pirates' season opener against Virginia University-Lynchburg at Darling Stadium, 6 p.m. Two weeks later, Hampton hosts new Coastal Athletic Association foe Bryant at 6 p.m., also at Darling Stadium.

Armstrong Stadium is undergoing a $3.2 million upgrade to replace the field's worn artificial turf, in place for 14 years, as well as the track surrounding the field. The surface will be replaced with Shaw Sports Turf's Legion 2.0 hybrid synthetic system, selected for its durability, resilience, and consistent playability. The upgraded surface is designed to support multi-sport use, accommodating football, women's soccer, and lacrosse for both games and practices, and features enhanced safety technology for impact absorption and improved traction.

The eight-lane track will also be refurbished and replaced with the Beynon BSS 1000 system. This 13-mm fully encapsulated Beynon track surface is engineered to provide optimal shock absorbency, superior energy return, and long-lasting durability. Field event areas for jumps, throws, and puts will be relocated adjacent to Armstrong Stadium to improve functionality and meet competition standards.

Darling Stadium is located 1.2 miles from the Hampton University campus, opened in 1989, and seats 8,000.
