McConnell joins the Hampton University staff in 2018 after serving on the football staff at The Apprentice School in Newport News for the last three seasons.
For his three years at Apprentice he served as the defensive coordinator and added Director of Football Operations to his role in April 2017.
In 2015 his defense improved in 10 of 11 categories as a unit, while throughout his tenure there his defense finished in the top 10 in 18 all-time categories.
A Tennessee native, McConnell graduated from Emory & Henry College where he was a four-year lettermen for the Wasps in the defensive backfield. He was an Old Dominion Athletic Conference All-Academic selection as a senior in 2007.
He coached mainly in the secondary at his first stops after college with Southern Virginia University (2007), West Virginia Wesleyan College (2008) and at Hargrave Military Academy (2009-2012). While at Hargrave he also served as Co-Defensive Coordinator along with working with the wide receivers and defensive backs.
McConnell moved to Jireh Prep Academy in 2013 where for one season he was assistant coach and defensive coordinator before taking over the head coaching role for the 2014 season.
