A veteran coach on both the high school and collegiate levels, Todd McComb joined the Hampton coaching staff in 2020 as co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Pirates.
Under McComb’s leadership, the Pirates boasted the top defense in 2024 in the Coastal Athletic Association’s (CAA) and 22nd nationally allowing just 317.7 yards per game. Hampton also topped the league and ranked 11th nationally in pass defense (167.8 yards per game), third in in the CAA and 20th nationally in third down defense (34.2 percent), fourth in the league and 12th in the nation in takeaways (19), fourth in the conference and 11th nationally in sacks (31), and led the league and finished fifth in the country in defensive touchdowns (3).
McComb was a presenter at the 2024 Glacier Clinic. He has coached two second-team all-conference players along with two HBCU Legacy Bowl performers. He coached the third-leading tackler in the CAA and mentored the second and 16th leading tackler in the league in 2022.
McComb came to Hampton after spending time as a defensive analyst for Coach Mack Brown at North Carolina. He assisted with opponent scouting, film breakdown, opponent game planning, and research into the offensive and defensive trends in collegiate and professional football. He helped lead the Tar Heels to a 7-5 mark and a victory in the 2019 Military Bowl.
From 2015-19, McComb was an assistant coach at Winston-Salem State and served as defensive coordinator his last three seasons at the school. He helped lead the Rams to a pair of CIAA titles.
McComb served as defensive coordinator at Northwest Guilford High School in 2014, helping lead the team to an 8-4 record. He spent the 2013 season at Ragsdale High School, where he was in charge of the special teams and the linebackers.
McComb spent seven seasons (2006–12) as an assistant coach and co-special team’s coordinator at his alma mater Catawba.
During the 2005 season, McComb served as a graduate assistant at North Carolina where he was involved in every aspect of the program from recruiting, coaching, academics, scouting reports, fundraising, and logistics.
McComb began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Coastal Carolina and learned how to break down film while coaching linebackers. While there, he helped the Chanticleers win the Big South title.
In 2016, he was selected to attend the NCAA/NFL Coaching Academy. The Academy is designed to provide future head coaches with necessary information and skills to advance.
McComb was a four-year starter at linebacker for Catawba. He finished his career ranked second in tackles with 401. McComb played on two South Atlantic Conference Championship teams (2000-2001). He was a four-time Daktronics All-Region selection (1999-02), a two-time South Atlantic All-Conference Performer (2001, 2002), a two-time All-American (2001, 2002), and a two-time Academic All-District selection (2001, 2002). McComb played in the Division II All-Star game (Cactus Bowl, January 2003), and received the top male athlete award from Catawba College in 2003 (Kirkland Award).
McComb was inducted into the Catawba Athletics Hall of Fame in 2024.
