Biography

2019-20 - SENIOR SEASON 
Played and started in all 29 games this season for the Lady Pirates, Bates earned second Team All-Conference after averaging 13.4 ppg, 2.4 apg, 3.4 spg and 5.6 rpg this year…was 130-for-310 (41.9%) from the floor and was 31-for-79 (39.2%) from beyond the arc on the season…she was named Big South Conference Player of the Week once. Bates was named Defensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row making her the first back-to-back winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award since 2013 and third in league history to pull that feat. Bates had three 20+ points games and seven games of five+ steals with a season high of 27 points against USC-Upstate. She finished first in steals, second in scoring, and was third in rebounds on the team. In the conference she leads in steals (3.4 spg), tenth in scoring averaging 13.5 ppg and 17th in rebounds (5.6 rpg). She became the first back-to-back winner of the Defensive Player of the Year award since 2013 and third in league history to pull that feat. Played a total of 997 minutes…finished the season with 390 points, 100 steals, 13 blocks, and 162 rebounds…she finished eighth  in the country among active NCAA players and amongst all NCAA divisions in steals with 326, and was fourth amongst NCAA Division I players. Bates swiped her way into record book at Hampton as she ended her career third in steals in Hampton history. 

2018-19- JUNIOR SEASON 
Played in 29 games for the Lady Pirates, making 29 starts on the season…averaged 17.4 points, 2.7 assists, 4.3 steals and 4.9 rebounds per contest…Bates scored a career-high and season single game high of 34 points vs. Winthrop University on March 9, shooting 12-20 from the field and 9-12 from the charity stripe and chipped in six rebounds with seven steals.…she led the Lady Pirates in scoring, 1st in steals with 125, 2nd in rebounds with 143 and 3rd in assist with 78…was named the VaSID Player of the Year and was named to the VaSID first team…Bates is the first Hampton player to be named VaSID Player of the Year in at least the last 15 years…she was named to the first team All-Conference along with being named the Conference Player of the Year as well as Defensive Player of the Year….she finished as the leading scorer in the Big South, as well as in steals and finished seventh in field goal percentage. Defensively, her 125 steals are a Big South single-season record and was third-most in NCAA Division I this year…Bates made BOXTOROW First team All-American list…the Big South introduced a Defensive Player of the Year award in 2005-06, and Bates has been the first player to win both Big South Conference Player of the Year as well as Defensive Player of the Year…she was featured in the newest issue of Slam Magazine in a section called "Picture Me Ballin"…She hit 46% from the floor, 31% from 3-point range and 65% from the foul line which were all tops in her three-year Lady Pirate career.

2017-18 - SOPHOMORE SEASON
Averaged 9.6 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and 2.2 steals per game…Ashley played in 32 games while starting in 27 games….hit 103-of-234 from the floor (.440) and 95-of-155 from the line (.613)…scored season high 22 twice against Delaware State on Jan. 12 along with season high 10 rebounds, and San Jose State on Nov. 25 where she had a season best of seven steals.

2016-17 - FRESHMAN SEASON
2017 MEAC All-Rookie Team selection…averaged 5.8 points and 3.2 rebounds per game…started five of 25 games played…earned MEAC Rookie of the Week honors after her first collegiate double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds in road win at Norfolk State…she hit two free throws in the final seconds to ice the win…season highs of 18 points and five steals in win over Coppin State…missed last six games with shoulder injury.

HOPKINS HIGH SCHOOL
Played four years of basketball for coach Brian Cosgriff and was a member of two Minnesota State Championship teams as a freshman and a junior…earned four All-Conference honors and was twice named All-State.

PERSONAL
Daughter of Patricia and Twan Bates…has two siblings – Alicia and Allana…wants to get into either counseling, nursing and work with kids…majoring in psychology.
