Maurice D. Williams

Maurice D. Williams is entering his 11th year as the Director of Sports Information at Hampton University. He handles the day-to-day operations of the office, and he currently serves as the primary media contact for football, men’s basketball, softball, and men’s and women’s golf.
 
In addition, Williams serves as the sport administrator for men’s & women’s golf, softball, men’s & women’s tennis and assistant professor in the health, recreation, and physical education department.
 
Under Williams’ direction, the Office of Sports Information is responsible for the maintenance of the official athletics website, HamptonPirates.com, as well as the creation and editing of such athletics-related publications as media guides, gameday programs (for football), and record books. In addition, all press conferences and interviews with student-athletes, coaches, and staff members are coordinated through the Office of Sports Information.
 
The athletics website has received three redesigns during Williams’ tenure, and he has been instrumental in creating and increasing the Hampton University Department of Athletics’ presence on social media with the creation of a YouTube and Facebook page, as well as Twitter pages for the overall department and the football, volleyball, men’s and women’s basketball, track & field, and softball programs.
 
Williams is also responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date records for 17 NCAA Div. I athletic programs, as well as co-ed sailing, and he is responsible for in-game statistics and press box operations for all home athletic contests – particularly football, basketball, and softball.
 
Williams currently holds memberships in the College Sports Directors of America (CoSIDA) and the Black College Sports Information Directors of America (BCSIDA). At CoSIDA, Williams has served on the Committee-on-Committees Committee, the Scholarships Committee, and is currently on the Academic All-Americans Committee and the Diversity & Inclusion Committee.
 
He was featured in the Feb. 2011 issue of CoSIDA Digest, and Williams was also the 2012 recipient of the CoSIDA Rising Star Award. He was also the 2016 recipient of CoSIDA's President's Award.
 
During Williams’ tenure at Hampton, the Department of Athletics has boasted over 50 All-Americans, more than 20 football players signing on with NFL teams, and more than 30 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars – including the 2008 Arthur Ashe Jr. Male Sports Scholar of the Year (Marcus Dixon, football).
 
As the sport administrator for golf, softball & tennis, Williams assists in the management of the team’s budgets, day-to-day operations as needed, implementation of programs rules and policies and enable in the direction of all three programs.
 
Williams has also taught college courses since the fall of 2010, presenting lectures on health, race and gender, physical education administration, and principles in physical education. Students in Williams’ classes learned about a variety of topics, including stress management, sexuality, chronic disease, psychosocial health, nutrition, alcohol use, and physical activity.
 
From January 2012 until December 2013, Williams also served as a Special Assistant to the Director of Athletics, assisting with scheduling and travel for the football program, while also assisting the Director of Athletics in other matters as needed.
 
Prior to coming to Hampton, Williams was the Director of Sports Information at Div. II Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C. He was the primary media contact for all 13 of Shaw’s varsity sports, and he was responsible for the creation and maintenance of content for Shaw’s athletics website, as well as other publications such as media guides, game notes, gameday programs, posters, and schedule cards.
  
A 2005 graduate of Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C., Williams got his start in sports information as an undergrad. There, he assisted with the day-to-day operations for volleyball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, and softball, and Williams also supervised gameday management and produced gameday programs and record books.
 
In addition to a Bachelor’s degree in English from Livingstone, Williams also holds two Master’s degrees: one in Education from Old Dominion University (2011), and one in Sport Administration from Hampton University (2014).
 
Williams is a native of Allendale, S.C.
