Cary, N.C.-Hampton Universities’ women’s cross country team kicked off their 2006 season today at the Raleigh Invitational, held at SAS Complex in Cary, N.C. The Lady Pirates captured 3rd place with 75 total points.
Hampton runners accounted for four of the top 25 spots in the official women’s college race, with junior Krystle Medlin (Clayton, N.C./ East Raleigh HS) leading the way taking ninth place with a time of 19:44. Senior Jitka Vaculikova (Prague,Czech Republic/ Gymnasium Stare Hesto) was 13th at 20:07 and senior Charmaine Darden (Norristown, Pa./ Norristown HS) placed 15th at 20:15.
Newcomers Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va./ Western Branch HS) and Marlene Belezaire (Hampton, Va./ Kecoughtan HS) rounded out Hampton's list of top 25 performers with Jones finishing 17th at 20:19 and Belezaire 21st at 21:14.
Host NC State finished atop the team standings with a score of 17. Campbell was second with 54 points, followed by Hampton at 75, Norfolk State at 105, St. Augustine’s at 141, and Meredith at 201.
Next, the Lady Pirates will head to the Cappy Anderson Invitational on Saturday, September 23rd hosted by UMES.
