Hampton, Va.- After two days of fantastic volleyball action at the 2006 Lady Pirate Labor Day Tournament it was all about who could “fly” the best as the Lady Eagles of North Carolina Central University proved their worth by winning with a perfect 4-0 tournament record. The Citadel finished second (3-1), followed by South Carolina State (2-2), Hampton (1-3) and Winston-Salem State University (0-4).
The host Hampton University opened their 2006 season with a 3-0 victory over the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State (3-0) inside Holland Hall on Friday night. Game scores were 30-19, 30-22 and 30-17.
2005 MEAC Rookie of the Year Morgan Williams (Duncanville, Texas/ Duncanville HS) paced the Lady Pirates with a match-high 13 kills, while Player of the Year contender Chavanca Hoskins (Dallas, Texas/Lincoln HS) followed with 10 kills and eight digs. Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind./Snider HS) chipped in with six service aces while Jasmin Elder handed out 30 assists. However this would be the only tournament victory for H.U.
In other day one action, the Lady Pirates lost their first game of the tournament, when they fell in three games to North Carolina Central University, 25-30, 26-30 and 30-21. The Lady Pirates later suffered five-game losses to The Citadel in the evening match falling 27-30, 21-30, 30-26, 30-23 and 15-17 and South Carolina State University 30-13, 28-30, 22-30, 30-25 and 14-16.
Hampton kept it close in all three games against North Carolina Central but where unable to break through as they were out hit by the Lady Eagles, .219 to .152. NCCU put the match away in game three closing out the final set 30-21.
Hampton held The Citadel to a .129 hitting percentage, but was unable to capitalize on the Bulldog’s offensive woes as they hit only .162 as a team. As a team H.U. out blocked the Bulldogs, 16-14, while The Citadel out dug Hampton 44-30.
In second day action, Hampton fell to SCSU 3-2 bringing their record to 2-1 on the season . Senior Chavanca Hoskins and sophomore Alssya Jackson were named Hampton University Labor Day All-Tournament team. Shari Matthews of NCCU was tabbed tournament MVP.
The Lady Pirates return to the net on Wednesday, September 6 to face off against VCU at 7 p.m,. in Richmond, Virginia.
