HOLMES NAMED BCA COACH OF THE WEEK

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Jerry Holmes, first-year head coach of the Hampton University football team, was named Coach of the Week by Black Coaches & Administrators (BCA) on Wednesday.

The Pirates (4-1, 3-0 MEAC) are on a three-game winning streak after defeating defending MEAC champion Delaware State 17-14 on Oct. 4. Hampton is the only MEAC team nationally ranked in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) Coaches Poll, coming in at No. 24.

Hampton comes out of its second bye week averaging 29.4 points per game, second-best in the MEAC, while also racking up 371.2 yards of total offense per game. That total is also good enough for second in the conference rankings.

Holmes, a graduate of West Virginia University who played 12 years of professional football in the NFL and USFL, is in his first year as head coach at Hampton University after serving as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. He was promoted when Joe Taylor left to take the head coaching position at Florida A&M.

The Pirates return to action this Saturday, taking on Norfolk State at Armstrong Stadium in the annual Battle of the Bay. Kickoff will be at 1 p.m.
