LADY PIRATES FALL TO NAVY IN FIVE GAMES

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Hampton University volleyball team gave the United States Naval Academy a hard time on Wednesday at Macdonough Hall, before ultimately falling 3-2 (25-19, 20-25, 25-27, 25-13, 19-17).

This was the second time the Lady Pirates faced Navy this season; the two teams met Sept. 12 in the Northern Arizona Tournament. Navy won that match easily 3-0, thanks to a killer serve, but the Lady Pirates negated that advantage this time, only allowing seven Navy aces.

Hampton, meanwhile, had nine service aces, four coming from freshman Mianna Armstrong (Lomond, Alberta).

Navy took the first game 25-19, but Hampton bounced back to take the second and third games, 25-20 and 27-25, respectively. With Hampton up 2-1, Navy put its starters back on the court and won the last two games, including the decisive fifth game that was pushed beyond 15 points.

Aaryn Harrison (Cary, N.C.) led the Lady Pirates with 16 kills, while Armstrong had 10. Senior Ebonie Vincent (Temecula, Calif.) only had eight kills, but with only two errors recorded a team-best .316 attack percentage.

Freshman Lihi Elkayam (Misgav, Israel) recorded 36 of Hampton’s 38 assists, while senior Alyssa Jackson (Fort Wayne, Ind.) led the Lady Pirates with 14 digs. Armstrong added 11 digs to her impressive stat sheet.

Alexa Gibbs led Navy with 17 kills, while Marissa Watson had a team-high 27 assists.

The loss gave Hampton a record of 2-20 heading into this past weekend’s MEAC contests against Delaware State and Coppin State.
