STUDENT-ATHLETES HONORED ON ACADEMIC NIGHT

HAMPTON, Va. Sixty-five Hampton University student-athletes were recognized during halftime at the Pirates’ basketball game against George Mason Thursday night at the Hampton University Convocation Center as part of Academic Night. The student-athletes recognized Thursday night earned Dean’s List honors during the spring 2008 semester.
 
Football led all teams with 15 players recognized, including sophomores Carlo Turavani (Ontario, Canada) and Dennis Mathis (Hampton, Va.). Senior Kevin Teel (Bowie, Md.), a two-sport star in football and track & field, was also among those recognized, along with sophomore Namon Freeman (Davidson, N.C.) and senior Charles Robinson (Hampton, Va.).
 
Women’s track & field saw eight athletes recognized, including Starema Flood (Upper Marlboro, Md.) and Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va.), who also compete on the cross country team. Junior Francena McCorory (Hampton, Va.) was also recognized, along with Michelle Smith (Teaneck, N.J.) and Rachel Lewis (Chesterfield, Va.).
 
Seniors Aminah Charles (Virginia Beach, Va.), Ese Ighedosa (Kansas City, Mo.) and Ebonie Vincent (Temecula, Calif.) were among four volleyball players recognized, while four Lady Pirates basketball players were recognized. Senior Chinyere Ukoh (Woodbridge, Va.) and junior Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va.) were honored, along with senior Ashlee Finley (Harrisburg, Pa.) and senior Sharella Leslie (Brooklyn, N.Y.).
 
Softball and bowling each had three honorees, while sailing boasted four. Men’s and women’s golf combined for nine athletes recognized, while men’s and women’s tennis combined for seven honorees. Men’s track and men’s basketball also saw four athletes each recognized for their academic achievement.
 
In order to be eligible for the Dean’s List, a student at Hampton University must compile a semester grade-point average of at least 3.0.
