VASSELL NAMED MEAC WOMEN’S TRACK PERFORMER OF THE WEEK

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Hampton University sophomore Racquel Vassell was named Women’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday, as announced by the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC).
 
Vassell (Irvington, N.J.) won two individual titles Saturday at the Christopher Newport Holiday Open in Newport News, Va. Her distance of 5.79 meters was good enough to win the long jump title, while Vassell also ran a 7.93 to win the 55-meter hurdles race.
 
She also led the 4x400-meter relay team to the gold medal with a combined time of 3:51.89, and Vassell finished second in the 55-meter dash after running a 7.02.
 
Hampton University men’s track & field athlete Predist Walker (Suffolk, Va.) was also named as one of the MEAC’s top performers of the week after winning a pair of titles at the Navy Invitational on Friday. He won the long jump (7.48 meters) and the 60-meter hurdles race (8.03).
 
Morgan State junior Kevin Bowen was named MEAC Men’s Indoor Track & Field Athlete of the Week after finishing in the Top 10 in five events throughout two meets over the weekend.
 
The Lady Pirates don’t have another track meet until after the New Year, when they travel to Blacksburg, Va. for the Virginia Tech Invitational on Jan. 9.
