LADY PIRATES SWEEP LADY BEARS IN CHARM CITY

BALTIMOREThe Hampton University softball team concocted the perfect recipe for success on Saturday at Morgan State, using solid pitching and a powerful offense to take a doubleheader from the host Lady Bears.

Hampton won the first game 9-1 before taking the second game 5-1.

Senior Brittany Davis (Columbus, Oh.) was a perfect 4-for-4 from the plate in the second game, driving in three runs. Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.) pushed her record to 5-0 by pitching a complete game, walking one and striking out six.

Jeffries drove in a run with a single in the top of the first inning in the second game, and the Lady Pirates (19-9, 4-0 MEAC) scored again in the third on an RBI groundout from Angela Balser.

Davis’ first RBI came in the fourth, when Hampton broke the game open. Her single to left field drove in the inning’s second run, after Tiffany Brents scored on a passed ball. Balser singled up the middle to bring home the third run of the inning.

A Morgan State (9-13, 3-2 MEAC) home run put the Lady Bears on the board, but Hampton put up another three-spot in the top of the sixth inning. Ashley Weissenbach (Moreno Valley, Calif.) singled home the first run, then came around on Davis’ two-run blast to right-center field.

Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.) drove in the game’s final run with a double in the top of the seventh.

The doubleheader sweep helps the Lady Pirates stay unbeaten in MEAC play and atop the Northern Division standings. Hampton faces Morgan State again Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, with the first pitch coming at 1 p.m.

The Lady Pirates don’t return home until April 22 when they take on Liberty University in a non-conference game.
