Game Notes

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University football team will look to get back into the win column on Saturday, when the Pirates welcome North Carolina Central to Armstrong Stadium to celebrate Homecoming.

Kickoff will be at 2 p.m.

The Pirates won 11 straight Homecoming games from 1980-1990, and had won six straight from 2001-06.

For the season, senior quarterback David Legree (Brooklyn, N.Y.) is completing 59.3 percent of his passes (115-for-194) for 1,338 yards and nine touchdowns. Legree is second in the MEAC in passing, averaging 223.0 yards per game in the air.

Sophomore linebacker Delbert Tyler (Monroeville, Pa.) is currently second in the MEAC in tackles with 67, averaging 11.2 per game, while junior linebacker Lyndell Gibson (Virginia Beach, Va.), a Virginia Tech transfer, is fourth in the conference with 63 tackles, an average of 10.5 per game. Junior defensive back Justin Blake (Piscataway, N.J.) is eighth in the MEAC with 55 tackles, 9.2 per contest.

Sophomore defensive end Robert Copeland (Hampton, Va.) is third in the MEAC in forced fumbles with two, while Gibson is fourth in that category. Copeland also has one recorded fumble, which places him tied for ninth in the conference.

The Pirates are 16-5 all-time against North Carolina Central and have won the last seven meetings between the two teams – including a 27-13 win in Durham, N.C. last season. The Pirates also beat NCCU the last time the two teams met at Armstrong Stadium, 31-24 to open the 2009 season. The two teams first met in 1924, with Hampton taking a 31-0 win that kicked off a string of nine straight wins in the series for the Pirates. The Eagles first beat Hampton in 1951, kicking off five straight wins for NCCU in the series.

The Pirates are 187-155-6 all-time against schools currently competing in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) following a 23-17 win over Florida A&M on Sept. 8, a 35-31 loss at Bethune-Cookman on Sept. 22 and a 34-24 loss at Norfolk State this past Saturday. Hampton is 9-8 against Bethune-Cookman; 23-13 against Delaware State; 8-12 against Florida A&M; 47-39-1 against Howard; 22-35-2 against Morgan State; 23-25-1 against Norfolk State; 25-15-2 against North Carolina A&T; 16-5 against MEAC newcomer North Carolina Central; 3-0 against MEAC newcomer Savannah State; and 11-6 against South Carolina State.
