HAMPTON ATHLETICS CELEBRATES 2015-16 ACADEMIC YEAR

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University Department of Athletics held its annual CHAMPS (Celebrating Hampton Athletes Meeting Prestigious Success) banquet at the Convocation Center on Tuesday evening, celebrating the 2015-16 academic year.

Men's basketball graduate student Quinton Chievous and women's track & field senior Ce'aira Brown were named the Male and Female Student-Athletes of the Year, while sailing senior Joshua Williams and women's basketball senior Ryan Jordan earned Academic Awards.

Chievous was a First Team All-MEAC selection and a BoxToRow First Team All-American after averaging a double-double this past season. His 17.0 points and 10.7 rebounds a game helped the Pirates win the MEAC regular season and tournament titles en route to a season straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Chievous led the MEAC and ranked 14th in the nation in rebounding.

He had 12 double-doubles on the season, helping the Pirates win 21 games. His career-best game was at Winthrop to open the season, when he dropped a career-high 29 points and grabbed 23 rebounds. Chievous also had 29 points against Delaware State on Feb. 29.

Brown dominated the MEAC Indoor Championships this past February, winning four events and setting two new conference records. She was the meet's Most Outstanding Runner, helping the Lady Pirates win their sixth straight MEAC indoor title. Brown was a First Team All-American in the 800-meter run after finishing seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships in March.

So far this outdoor season, Brown has broken two school records. She currently ranks fourth in the nation in the 800-meter run, thanks to the record 2:02.82 she ran at the Florida Relays.

Williams, who was also named a 2016 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar, has a 3.98 GPA, while Jordan has a 3.92 GPA.

Former Hampton football standout Greg Scott was the event's guest speaker.
