HAMPTON, Va. – Over the course of the next few weeks, current and former Hampton University track & field student-athletes will be competing in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Francena McCorory is a reigning gold medalist from the 2012 Games in London, where she was on the 4x400-meter relay team. She will again be on the relay team in Rio, despite not qualifying in the 400-meter dash – an event she won three NCAA titles in while at Hampton.
McCorory is currently ranked third in the world in the 400-meter dash.
Yvette Lewis, who was a two-time NCAA champion at Hampton and currently serves as an assistant coach, has already qualified for Rio and will be competing in Panama in the 100-meter hurdles. She currently holds the school record in the outdoor 100-meter hurdles (13.06), as well as all three outdoor jumping events (high jump, long jump, triple jump).
In addition, former Pirate standout Brandon Jones will compete in Rio for Belize, his father's native land, running the 200-meter dash. Jones was a prolific jumper at Hampton, currently holding the school record in the outdoor triple jump (15.57 meters).
The 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro will run Aug. 5-21.
