ORLANDO, Fl— Hampton University men's tennis team started their Spring Break slate at the United States Tennis Association National Campus splitting a pair of matches on Monday as they dropped the opener 7-0 to Valparaiso and defeated Saint John's University (MN) 5-2 on Monday evening.

Against the Johnnies, Hampton got a win in doubles as
Fernando Fernandes and
Charles Hudson won 7-6 at line two but the Pirates dropped the doubles point losing the other two doubles matches.

In singles,
Luke Thompson scored a 6-0, 6-1 win at line three to lead a Hampton sweep of the five contested singles matches.Â
Davy Van Geerke, Fernandes and Hudson all took 6-2, 6-1 wins for Hampton in earning their first win of the year.

Against Valparaiso in doubles, the duo of
Luke Thompson and
Davy Van Geerke were able to win 6-4 at line one. The Crusaders would win 8-6 at line two and line three by default to clinch the point. In singles, the Crusaders swept the five matches to take the victory.

Hampton (1-6, 0-2) returns to action on Tuesday in Orlando, Florida against Appalachian State University at 11:30 am.Â
