Hampton Opens CAA Play at Richmond

HAMPTON, VA. (September 28, 2023) … Hampton (2-1) opens the CAA portion of the schedule traveling to the state capital to take on Richmond (2-2).
The game pits Hampton's potent rushing attack against the stalwart Spider run defense. The Pirates lead the CAA in rushing with 253.7 yards per contest while the Spiders yield just 120.3 yards per game.
Hampton's run game is centered around Elijah Burris and Darran Butts. A 5-10 junior, Burris averages 10.0 yards per carry amassing 339 yards (113.0 yards per game) through the first three games. The 5-10 Butts, a redshirt-senior, averages 6.1 yards per tote with 227 yards (75.7 yards per game) and three TDs.
In addition, quarterback Chris Zellous is a threat to run or pass. The 6-3 redshirt junior has rushed for 202 yards (67.3 yards per game) with four scores.
On defense, linebacker Qwahsin Townsel is the CAA's fourth-leading tackler with 11.0 tackles per game. He is a preseason All-CAA pick.
Richmond is coming off a heart-stopping 20-19 win at Stony Brook on Sept. 23. Trailing 19-17, Andrew Lopez booted a 28-yard field goal with :46 left to lift the Spiders to the win.
The victory evened Richmond's record at 2-2. The Spiders lost to Morgan State, 17-10, in the season-opener on Sept. 2 and fell, 45-14, at Michigan State a week later. On Sept. 16, Richmond topped Delaware State, 38-6, before last week's Stony Brook win.
Richmond wide receiver Nick DeGennaro, a redshirt junior, has 20 catches for 225 yards and two scores. Linebacker Tristan Wheeler, a redshirt senior, averages 11.5 tackles per game, third best in the CAA. Zander Barnett has 2.5 sacks on the season.
The game is only the fifth meeting between the two teams in a series that began in 2005. The Spiders won the four games against the Pirates.
The 2005 meeting was in the opening round of the I-AA (now FCS) Playoffs with the Spiders earning a 38-10 win. The loss spoiled Hampton's perfect season. The Pirates finished 11-1 and were named the SBN Black National Champions. Richmond finished the season with a 9-4 record after losing to Furman, 24-20, a week later.
Richmond won the last match-up between the two teams. Richmond earned a 41-20 decision over the Pirates on Oct. 22, 2022. The Spiders built a 34-10 halftime lead en route to the win.

Hampton hosts new CAA member Campbell on Oct. 7 at 2:00 p.m. The teams have met twice, both times in Buies Creek, N.C. The Camels won the first meeting, 31-6 in 2019 and the Pirates prevailed in 2021 by a 28-21 score. Both teams were members of the Big South Conference at the time.
