Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

A&T Nips Hampton at the Wire, 81-80

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 15, 2024) … In an ultra-exciting game that literally went down to the wire, North Carolina A&T (4-13, 2-2) slipped past Hampton (4-13, 0-5), 81-80, with a basket by Landon Glasper with 1.2 seconds left before a raucous crowd of 3,020 at the Hampton Convocation Center.

In the back-and-forth second half there were five lead changes and nine ties as neither team was able to build an advantage. Jordan Nesbitt put the Pirates ahead, 80-79, with a basket with just 6.6 seconds left in the contest setting up Glasper's last-second heroics for the Aggies. Hampton's last-second shot fell short sending the Pirates to their eighth straight loss.

Five players scored double figures for the Pirates led by Jerry Deng and Nesbitt, who had 17 points each. Tristan Maxwell added 12 while Joshua Lusane and Trey Thomas scored 10 points apiece. A&T's Glasper led all scorers with 24 points while teammates Camian Shell (19), Nikolaos Chitkoudis (15), and Uchenna Kellman-Nicholes (10) also scored double-digits. For the game, Hampton shot 50 percent from the field while A&T was good of 53.3 percent of its shots.

The first half was a game of streaks. A 9-0 run by the Aggies gave North Carolina A&T an 18-11 lead with 12:51 to go in the first half. The Aggies lead grew to 11 with 8:34 left. But back-to-back baskets by Joshua Lusane in the midst of a 12-0 Hampton run, boosted the Pirates to a 33-30 lead. It marked Hampton's first lead of the game.

After back-and-forth lead changes, Daniel Banister's three-pointer put the Pirates ahead 42-39 with :26 left. But A&T's Glasper hit a trey with :04 left to tie the game, 42-42, at intermission. There were six lead changes and three ties in the first 20 minutes of play as both teams shot 50 percent from the field.

Nine players scored for the Pirates in the first half led by Nesbitt's eight points. For the Aggies, Shell and Glasper each tallied 11 points.

Neither team was able to put together a rally in the second half. In the first 16 minutes of the second half, there were eight ties but no lead changes.

A late Hampton lead was erased by an Aggie basket and a three-pointer by Glasper, giving the A&T its first lead of the second half, 74-73, with 2:16 to go. Neither team was able to pull away in the final minutes setting up the game's decisive final seconds.
