Hampton to Play First Ever Power Five Opponent in 2026

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 26, 2024) … Hampton will travel to College Park, Md. To take on Maryland Sept. 5, 2026 at SECU Stadium. The game will mark the first meeting ever between the two teams and will mark Hampton's first football game against a Power Five opponent.

"We are thrilled to announce the historic football clash between Hampton and Maryland scheduled for September 5, 2026, at SECU Stadium," stated Director of Athletics Anthony D. Henderson, Sr. "This game is not only significant as our first meeting with a Power Five opponent but also holds special meaning due to the tremendous number of alumni we have in the DMV area. Playing in the DMV is always eagerly anticipated, and this matchup provides us with another exciting opportunity to unite our alums in a celebration of our strong community."

Hampton has a rich and celebrated history. The Pirates have won seven HBCU National Championships and 19 conference titles. Hampton earned five invitations to the I-AA/FCS playoffs and made three Division II playoff appearances.

The Pirates posted an improved 5-6 record last year as a member of the Coastal Athletic Association. Coach Robert Prunty's team posted victories over traditional powerhouse Grambling State, longtime rival Howard and NCAA Playoff participant Richmond in 2023.

The Pirates open the 2024 campaign on Aug. 31 when Hampton takes on Morgan State in the Prudential Brick City Classic in Harrison, N.J. Hampton participated in the Brick City Classic in 2023, recording a 35-31 win over Grambling State.
