FARMVILLE, Va. (February 28, 2025) … The Hampton University tennis teams visited former Big South rival Longwood on Friday and came up on the short end of two decisions. The women lost 4-3 to the Lancers, while the men fell 7-0.
The women started off losing the doubles point as
Serena Bryan and
Diana Starodubtseva took a 6-2 decision at No. 1, while the Lancers won at No. 2 and the clincher at No. 3.
In singles, the Pirates jumped out with wins at the top three spots. Starodubtseva won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1, with
Meiri Okuwaki winning 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 and Bryan taking a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 3. Longwood answered with wins at No. 6, No. 5 and then a three-set win at No. 4 to come back for the win.
In the men's match, the doubles duo of
Benedict Badza and
Marko Stoilkovski took a 6-4 win at No. 2. In singles, Stoilkovski fell in a third-set super tiebreaker 10-7 as he lost 7-5, 6-7, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 5.
Sunday's scheduled matches for both teams have been postponed until later in the season. The women will host William & Mary on Wednesday at 2 p.m., while both teams will host Norfolk State and Chowan on Thursday at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. respectively.
