Director of Athletics Anthony D. Henderson Sr. Speaks on Greater Hampton Roads Better Business Bureau Coach’s Corner

HAMPTON, Va. (June 6, 2025) … The Greater Hampton Roads Better Business Bureau hosted Hampton University Director of Athletics Anthony D. Henderson Sr. on Coaches Corner hosted by CEO Claudell Clark. During their conversation, Henderson Sr. and Clark discussed the business side of college athletics and how it impacts the product on the field. Along with the business of college athletics, Henderson Sr. talked about how he began his early career off-the-field in collegiate athletics. 

During his two years as the Director of Athletics, Henderson Sr. has facilitated significant changes within the department's structure. A staffing increase of 225 percent, along with a new organizational structure and the hiring of seven new head coaches. The 2024-25 athletic calendar saw the women's track and field program claim its first Coastal Athletic Association title, winning the 2025 Indoor Track and Field Championship. This marked Hampton's first championship since joining the CAA in 2022.

Claudell Clark also has experience in college athletics, serving as the baseball coach at Norfolk State for 13 seasons. Under his direction, the program won three Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference North Division titles. Three of Clark's student-athletes were taken in the Major League draft. Before joining the coaching ranks, he had a successful playing career at Norfolk State. Clark was taken by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2001 Major League draft.

Henderson Sr. is the first Director of Athletics to appear on Coaches Corner. The interview with Clark provided an opportunity for Henderson Sr. to share insight on ever changing world of collegiate athletics and how Hampton University is navigating the scene.
