Damion Drummond is in his third season as an assistant coach working with Maurice Pierce, and his second season working with the Hampton University men’s and women’s cross country programs, as well as both teams’ distance runners.
Drummond spent the 2011-12 season as an assistant coach with the women’s track team.
Thanks in part to Drummond’s coaching in 2012-13, the Lady Pirates finished second in the MEAC Cross Country Championships, narrowly missing out on their third straight title and netting three All-MEAC performers. The Pirates, meanwhile, finished seventh.
2012-13 also saw senior Benita Taylor establish herself as one of the nation’s top middle-distance runners, as she earned Second Team All-America honors in both the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run.
Drummond’s coaching experience began when he served as a graduate assistant at Maryland Eastern Shore for two years, before serving as a volunteer assistant for two more seasons. During his tenure at UMES, the Hawks took the 2007 men’s and women’s team titles, while also winning the indoor team title in 2008. Drummond helped coach six NCAA participants and six Olympic Trial qualifiers while at UMES.
Drummond then served as head track & field coach at Washington High School in Princess Anne, Md. for two years, where he coached one state champion and helped the school win the 2009 Maryland State Regional outdoor team title, before moving on to Mount Mercy University, where he was an assistant coach for sprints and middle-distance. He also assisted with the program’s strength and conditioning.
While at Mount Mercy, Drummond coached one NAIA All-American, 14 combined individual and relay conference champions and 11 combined individual and relay national qualifiers. During Drummond’s tenure, 12 school records fell over the course of the 2010-11 indoor and outdoor seasons.
Drummond began his collegiate career at the University of Tennessee, where he helped the team capture the Southeastern Conference title under head coach George Watts. After two years, Drummond transferred to UMES, where in 2006 he earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science. While an undergraduate at UMES, Drummond was an All-MEAC selection in the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run, as well as an All-MEAC selection in cross country and an All-MEAC Academic honoree.
Drummond, who would later receive a masters degree in rehabilitation counseling from UMES, is also the MEAC record holder in the 800-meter run.
A member of USA Track & Field as both an athlete and a coach, Drummond enjoys running, playing soccer, auto mechanics and watching HGTV. He is married to Kristen Drummond. Since 2009, he has also represented his native Jamaica as a member of the Central Park Track Club – New Balance.
