Hampton University, founded in 1868, is located on 254 acres of Virginia’s Peninsula. It is a privately endowed, historically black comprehensive institution of higher education. The main campus consists of 114 separate buildings comprising more than 1,836,229 gross square feet of space. The campus also contains 30 acres of athletic fields, is a NCAA Division I AA school currently champions in the Mid-eastern Athletic Conference in Football, Men’s Basketball and Women’s Track events. We have athletes who hold membership in academic scholarship organizations. “Education for Life, the Standard of Excellence” as found in our mission statement is partially recognized by the outcomes of our students excelling in the classroom, in multiple areas of academia and the professional world. Some examples of these outcomes follow: Education student team was awarded 3rd place out of 35 entries, in their first ever placement in the Poster Contest at the 11thAnnual NASA/National Institute of Aerospace Pre-service Teacher conference. This conference is a vehicle for teacher candidates to interact with science, engineering and technology professionals from various disciplines; Senior psychology major recipient of the NY Life Rainbow PUSH Excel Award; student selected and participated in the 2006 Sports Journalism Institute summer fellowship; two students named as finalists in the American Advertising Federation’s Most Promising Minority Students Program(only 51 positions available); HU bone marrow drive set a new state (VA) record, netted more than 400 donors in one day, was sponsored in conjunction with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the National Marrow Donor Program; 2006 Teacher of the Year, a Hampton University Alumnus; Department of Engineering and Technology sponsored “Adventures in Engineering” for local school children for middle an elementary school children; the 10th Honor’s College W.E.B. Du Bois H.U. Invitational Honors Conference for 350 middle and high school students from 14 schools in Virginia and Maryland focusing on first job, what makes each person unique, managing money, choosing a major and dressing for success. These workshops are presented by former “honors students” who seek to give back to their alma mater and lastly the student involvement in the HU Center for Aero-Propulsion—the largest research center in HU’s School of Engineering & Technology and sponsored by NASA. The center divides into 2 divisions, research and education, and seeks “Future Space Technology”. These are but a few examples.


The University is dedicated to the promotion of learning, building of character and preparation of promising students for positions of leadership and service. Its curricular emphasis is scientific and professional and has as its base, strong liberal arts under girding. Learning is facilitated by a range of educational offerings: a rigorous curriculum, excellent teaching, opportunity for faculty development and research, professional experiences, leadership opportunities and public service, all integral parts of the Hampton mission.


Hampton University is committed to multiculturalism and serves students from diverse national, cultural, educational and economic backgrounds. From its beginning to the present, the institution has enrolled students from some 45 states, five continents and as many as 9 countries. The enrollment for 2005-06 of 6,309 students is as follows: 5,325 undergraduates; 762 Graduates and 222 first professionals. The population representation: 88.1% Black, 9.33% White, 1.2% Asian and 1.4% all other. The age range for undergraduates under 18 to 21 years = 81.4%; 22-25 years = 8.65%, while the graduate/professional age range is 54% for ages 22-29 and 43% for ages 30–40. Placing its students at the center of its planning, the university provides a holistic educational environment. In carrying out its mission, the University requires that everything it does be of the highest quality.

The University awards the following A.S., B.A., B.S., M.A., MBA, Education Specialist, PharmD, DPT, and PhD degrees. The baccalaureate degree is awarded for programs in architecture, business, chemical and electrical engineering, communicative sciences and disorders, computer science, mass media arts, music, music engineering technology, nursing, and liberal arts; which programs are accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board, the International Assembly of Collegiate Business Education, the Accreditation Board of Engineering Technology, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the Computing Sciences Accrediting Board, Inc., the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, the National Association of Schools of Music, the National League for Nursing, and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, respectively. The chemistry program is approved by the Committee on Professional Training of the American Chemical Society. The Council on Aviation Accreditation has approved the aviation computer science, the aviation electronic systems, the aviation management-administration, and the aviation management-air traffic controllers program in the Department of Aviation. Additional undergraduate programming includes: art, biological sciences, criminal justice, economics, emergency medical systems management, English, entrepreneurship, banking and finance, fire administration, general studies, history, mathematics, physical education, physics, political science, psychology, recreation, religious studies, sociology/social work, systems organization and management, and theater.
The PhD is awarded in Nursing and Physics, the PharmD in Pharmacy, and the DPT for Physical Therapy. The pharmacy and education programs are accredited by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, respectively.

The Master is awarded for programs is counseling, communicative sciences and disorders, special education, medical science, nursing, computer science, business administration, early childhood (history, English, psychology), secondary (English, history, psychology, music) and physics.

The College of Continuing Education offers programs leading to degrees in aviation maintenance technology (AS), and the baccalaureate in fire administration, emergency medical systems, paralegal studies, systems organization and management, business management, and general studies.

The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the Department of Education of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

The University holds membership in the Council of Graduate Schools, the Council of Independent Colleges in Virginia, and the American Council on Education, the Association of New American Colleges and is on the list of the 100 most wired Campuses.

Hampton University’s libraries include the William R. and Norma B. Harvey Library (main) and satellite libraries in the School of Nursing, the Department of Architecture and the Department of Fine and Performing Arts. The facility’s collection includes over 365,000 books and bound periodicals, and more than 640,000 microfilms. The library regularly receives 1,360 current periodicals and subscribes to 29 newspapers. The unified online catalog for the University is HUWEBCAT and provides a World Wide Web interface accessible from the University’s web site.

The oldest African American museum in the United States and one of the oldest museums in Virginia, the University Museum located in Huntington Building has holdings of more than 9,000 objects, including traditional art from Africa, Native America, Asia and Oceania; African American fine arts; and artifacts depicting the University’s history.

The Museum sponsors exhibitions, lectures, symposia, art workshops, and publishes the International Review of African American Art. It also operates a gift shop, which carries a unique array of art, jewelry, and other interesting items. For further information, please call 757-727-5308.
