Lady Pirates capture Cappy Anderson title

Princess Anne, Md.-Junior Krystle Medlin (Clayton, N.C.-East Raleigh HS), freshman Kenya Jones (Chesapeake, Va./ Western Branch HS) and senior Charmaine Darden (Norristown, Pa./ Norristown HS) took eighth, ninth and tenth place respectively as Hampton University had no difficulty winning the Cappy Anderson Invitational hosted by the University of Maryland-Eastern Shore this weekend.

For the second week in a row, Medlin was HU’s top finisher running a time of 19:05.68. Medlin was followed by Jones who clocked in at 19:27.62 with Darden close behind finishing in 19:38.09.

Newcomers Marlene Belezaire (Hampton, Va./ Kecoughtan HS) and Janean Morris (Brooklyn, N.Y./ Bishop Loughlin HS) completed the list of Lady Pirates top 20 finishers. Belezaire finished in 15th place with a time of 20:27.45 while Morris broke the tape in 20:43.75 to claim the 18th spot.

Hampton University claimed the team title with 60 points followed by Seton Hall in second with 63 points and host UMES, with 76 points, rounded out the top three teams.

The Lady Pirates will return to action course next Saturday when they’ll compete at the Colonial Inter-Regional Meet hosted by The College of William & Mary.
