Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University women's basketball team used another strong second half to pull out a 66-52 come-from-behind win over UNC-Wilmington Sunday afternoon at the Convocation Center.

The Lady Pirates (2-0) picked up their first-ever win in three tries against the Seahawks, outscoring UNCW 46-31 in the second half alone. Hampton got off to another slow start in the first half and trailed by one at the intermission, but once the second half started, shots began to fall for the Lady Pirates and their defense caused UNCW to turn the ball over 13 times in the second half.

Senior Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va.) led all scorers with 20 points before she fouled out with 43 seconds to play. All but one of those points for Hill came in the second half, as she keyed a 27-11 run for Hampton that lasted roughly 11 minutes. UNCW led 29-25 with 17:26 left to play, when Brittany Blackwell hit a layup, but Hampton would score the next 10 points – four of which came from Hill.

By the time Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit a 3-pointer to complete the run with 6:26 left, Hampton led 53-40. Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) chipped in a layup almost a minute later to put the Lady Pirates up 55-40.

Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) had 12 points for the Lady Pirates on 4-for-10 shooting, while freshman Breanna Jones (Springfield, Va.) added 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.

Blackwell led the Seahawks with 15 points and eight rebounds. Kelsy Reitz added 10 points for UNCW behind a 2-for-3 shooting performance behind the arc.

Hampton shot 21-for-62 (34 percent) for the game, going 5-for-17 from behind the arc. All five of Hampton's 3-pointers came in the second half; Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) hit a pair, while Fortune, Lewis and Hill each hit one. UNCW (1-2) shot 40 percent (17-for-42) for the game, but had 24 turnovers and just nine assists.

Hampton out-rebounded the Seahawks 42-36.

The Seahawks opened the game on a 10-2 run, as the Lady Pirates missed their first nine field goals and didn't score until the 12:06 mark, when Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) hit a pair of free throws. McMillian then gave Hampton its first field goal of the game when she hit a jumper with 10:48 left in the half. From there, the Lady Pirates went on a 10-0 run to take a 12-10 lead when Jones hit a layup with 6:36 left in the half.

Jones would hit another layup with three seconds left in the first half, cutting the Seahawks' lead to 21-20 going into the intermission. UNCW shot 29.2 percent (7-for-24) in the first half, hitting both of its 3-point attempts, while Hampton shot just 5-for-33 (15.2 percent). McMillian and Jones each led the Lady Pirates with six points in the first half.

Blackwell led the Seahawks with seven points in the first half.
