Laura Lewis recorded her first career double-double, but it wasn't enough as the Hampton University women's basketball team fell 84-71 to Southern Methodist Friday night at Moody Coliseum on the first day of the SMU Hoops For the Cure Tournament.
Lewis (Dallas, Texas) scored a career-high 18 points on 6-for-15 shooting and a 5-for-7 effort on the free throw line, while also pulling in a career-high 12 rebounds. She joined two other Lady Pirates who scored in double figures; sophomore
Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) poured in 17 points behind the strength of five 3-pointers, while
Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) added 13.
Brittany Gilliam led five Mustangs who scored in double figures with 20; Jillian Samuels added 14 points and Christine Elliott added 13, while Haley Day and Alisha Filmore each chipped in 10 points. Gilliam also had a team-high nine rebounds.
SMU shot 48.1 percent (25-for-52) from the floor, while also making four of its 12 3-point attempts. The Lady Pirates shot 33.3 percent (24-for-72) from the floor, making eight of 25 3-pointers (32.0 percent). The Mustangs out-rebounded Hampton 48-41, though the Lady Pirates forced SMU into 18 turnovers, while only committing 14 turnovers on the offensive end.
SMU led by as much as 28 points, when Heidi Brandenburg hit a layup with 8:14 to play to put the Mustangs up 68-40.
Hampton (2-2) never led, as SMU jumped out to an early 6-1 lead when Alice Severin hit a jumper with 17:32 left in the half. The Lady Pirates got their first field goal of the game at the 17:14, when Jenkins hit her first 3-pointer of the night. SMU would respond with an 8-0 run in the middle of the half.
The Mustangs (5-0) closed the first half on an 11-2 run to go into the intermission up 39-26.
Gilliam led all scorers with 11 points in the first half, as the Mustangs shot 11-for-27 (40.7 percent) in the period. The Lady Pirates shot 26.7 percent (8-for-30) from the floor in the first half, led by nine points from Jenkins.
Lewis had six of her rebounds in the first half.
