LADY PIRATES FALL TO GEORGIA TECH

Quanneisha Perry and Bernadette Fortune each scored 11 points, but it wasn't enough on Monday as the Hampton University women's basketball team fell 63-54 to Georgia Tech on the first day of the Florida International Sun & Fun Classic, held at the U.S. Century Bank Arena.

Perry (Decatur, Ga.) hit a jumper with 9:10 to play to put the Lady Pirates (3-8) up 43-42, but Georgia Tech went on a 13-0 run that culminated in a layup from Deja Foster with 5:15 to play to put the Yellow Jackets up 55-43 – Georgia Tech's largest lead of the game. Hampton closed within six twice – on a Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) layup with 2:55 to play to cut Georgia Tech's lead to 57-51, and on a Whitney Hill (Hampton, Va.) jumper with 2:24 to play for a 59-52 score.

Brigitte Ardossi hit Georgia Tech's last two field goals to put away the game.

Perry and Fortune were the only Lady Pirates to score in double figures; Perry went 5-for-10 from the floor and pulled down a team-high six rebounds, while Fortune went 5-for-11 from the floor. Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) and Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) each had nine points.

Ardossi led three Yellow Jackets in double figures with 24 points; Alex Montgomery added 12 points, and Foster scored 10 to go along with a team-high nine rebounds.

Georgia Tech (11-2) shot 44.7 percent (21-for-47) from the floor in wining its sixth straight game and 31.3 percent (5-for-16) from 3-point range. Hampton went 22-for-52 (42.3 percent) from the floor, making five of 13 3-point attempts and five of seven free throws.

The Lady Pirates held a 31-30 rebounding edge, but Georgia Tech forced 19 Hampton turnovers, turning them into 16 points. There were seven ties and 16 lead changes.

Hampton had the lead with 2:28 to play in the first half, holding a 25-23 lead after Foster hit a pair of free throws. The Lady Pirates led by as many as four in the first half, when Lewis hit a layup with 2:50 to play to put Hampton up 25-21. A 3-pointer from Montgomery with 34 seconds left in the half gave the Yellow Jackets the lead, putting Georgia Tech up 28-27 at the intermission.

Ardossi led Georgia Tech with 12 points in the first half on 9-for-12 shooting and going 6-for-8 from the free throw line. Lewis led the Lady Pirates with nine points at the intermission. Georgia Tech shot 11-for-27 from the floor (40.7 percent) in the first half, while Hampton shot 38.7 percent (12-for-31). Both teams had 18 first-half rebounds.
