Box Score

HAMPTON, Va. –
Despite leading for most of the second half Tuesday night, the Hampton University women's basketball team fell 54-51 to the Owls of Temple University at the HU Convocation Center.

Kristen McCarthy converted a stick-back with 1:13 left to play to give Temple its first lead since the first half, 52-51. Sophomore Bernadette Fortune (Virginia Beach, Va.) missed what would've been the go-ahead layup with 27 seconds to play, and in the fight for the rebound, the Owls came away with possession on a jump ball.

LaKeisha Eaddy hit two free throws with 13 seconds left to ice the game.

The Lady Pirates (2-5) led by as many as seven, when Fortune capped a 9-2 run with a layup with 10:11 to play to give Hampton a 47-40 lead. Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) would sink a jumper with 8:18 to play to give the Lady Pirates a 49-43 lead, but Hampton would not score another basket until Laura Lewis (Dallas, Texas) made a pair of free throws with 2:55 left to give the Lady Pirates a 51-48 lead.

Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) led the Lady Pirates with 11 points on 4-for-6 shooting and a 3-for-5 effort from behind the arc. Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) added 10 points in the loss, while Lewis led the Lady Pirates with five rebounds before fouling out with 2:18 to play.

Jasmine Stone had a game-high 15 points and 18 rebounds for the Owls (7-1).

Temple shot 34.5 percent (19-for-55) from the floor, while Hampton shot 16-for-51 (31.4 percent). The Lady Pirates also made five of their 16 attempts from 3-point range. Temple out-rebounded Hampton 45-33, though Hampton forced the Owls into 19 turnovers.

Hampton held a 32-29 lead at the half, thanks in large part to eight points each from Jenkins and McMillian and another six from Lewis. McMillian gave the Lady Pirates the lead for good in the first half when she sank a 3-pointer with 7:08 remaining in the frame to put Hampton up 20-19. A trey from Jenkins with 5:08 left in the first half put the Lady Pirates up 25-21, their largest lead of the half.

The Lady Pirates shot 36 percent (10-for-28) from the floor in the first half and 4-for-11 (36 percent) from behind the arc. Hampton was also 8-for-10 from the free throw line.

Both teams had 20 rebounds in the first half, and Hampton forced Temple into eight first-half turnovers. The Owls shot 40 percent (12-for-30) from the floor and made just one of eight 3-point attempts in the first half.

Stone and Shaqwedia Wallace each had eight points for the Owls in the first half.
