LADY PIRATES RUN OVER LADY RAMS

. -- The Hampton University women's basketball team stretched its winning streak to six against the Lady Rams of Winston-Salem State, coming away with a 67-26 win at the Clarence E. Gaines Center on Monday night. 

The Lady Pirates (12-10, 7-3 MEAC), dominated the game on both sides of the ball. Hampton went on a 29-0 run in the second half which ended with a lay-up by Breanna Jones (Springfield, Va.) at the 7:44 mark; at that mark they were up 60-10. 

The Lady Pirates shot 45.5 percent from the 3-point line and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line in the second half. 

In the first half, the Lady Pirates came out with tenacious “D”. They forced 16 turnovers and made 12 points off the Lady Rams' mistakes. Melanie Warner (Tallahassee, Fla.) layup at the 19:34 mark of the first half started a 25-5 run for the Lady Pirates. 

Hampton only allowed the Lady Rams to shoot 17.6 percent from the floor which is the season-low for an opponent. Plus, they only gave up eight in the second half, which is a new record for points allowed in one half. 

The Lady Pirates were led in points by reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week Quanneisha Perry (Decatur, Ga.) and Jericka Jenkins (Lancaster, Texas) with 12 points apiece. Off the bench, Choicetta McMillian (Fairfield, Texas) had 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds. 

“I feel that bench play is extremely important. We are the ones that give the starters a break; and we go out to do our job and keep the intensity going” said McMillian. “I credit my hard work to dedication and focus; as well as staying positive through turmoil” Hampton had 26 bench points to the Lady Rams' nine. 

The Lady Pirates also had a season-high in free-throw percentage at 91.7 percent, going 11-for-12 from the stripe. The Lady Pirates shot 32 percent from the 3-point line while the Lady Rams shot 6.7 percent, which is a season-low for an opponent. 

The Lady Pirates tied a record in allowing WSSU 26 points, which also occurred on Jan. 19, 1976, when the Lady Pirates beat Fort Monroe 35-26. Vintisha Woods led the Lady Rams with six points and six rebounds. 

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they face the Lady Spartans of Norfolk State at 4 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
