PIRATES, LADY PIRATES FINISH GOLF SEASON

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. –
The Hampton University men's and women's golf teams completed the 2009-10 season this past weekend at the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship, which was held Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Ryder and Wanamaker Courses.

The Lady Pirates finished third in the women's team championship after shooting a 97-over 949 (320-308-321). Freshman Kayla Williams (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) led the Lady Pirates with a 226 (77-72-77), while sophomore Dionne West (Springdale, Md.) shot a 236 (78-76-82).

Williams' second-round 72 was the low round for the Lady Pirates.

Sophomore Iman Ellis (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) shot a 237 (81-79-77). Sophomore Sydnee Mack (Las Vegas, Nev.) shot a 250 (84-81-85), while junior Jessi Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ga.) shot a 276 (88-96-92).

Bethune-Cookman won the women's team title with a 33-over 885 (295-295-295). Bethune-Cookman's Kim Wong turned in the best individual score with a 216 (70-71-75).

Freshman Nicole West (Springdale, Md.) shot a 243 (82-81-80) to finish in a tie for seventh in the women's individual invitational. Cal State-Monterey bay's Cicilia Chudivan shot a 220 (71-77-72) to win the individual title.

The Pirates finished 12th in the men's Division I standings after firing a 138-over 1,002 (344-324-334). Freshman Curtis Fearrington (Attica, N.Y.) shot a 247 (88-76-83), and graduate student Oscar Ayala (Easton, Pa.) fired a 248 (87-88-73).

Ayala's third-round 73 was the low round for the Pirates.

Junior Sidney Fields (Decatur, Ga.) had a three-day score of 256 (85-81-90), while sophomore Javier Lopez (Chicago, Ill.) shot a 263 (84-91-88) and sophomore Geoffrey Napper (Bowie, Md.) fired a 265 (91-79-95).

Texas Pan-American won the men's Division I team title with an 8-over 872 (290-291-291). Texas Pan-American's Armen Kirakossian turned in the best individual score with a 211 (72-71-68).
