EUGENE, Ore. – Hampton University senior
Francena McCorory won the third NCAA title of her collegiate career on Friday, taking the 400-meter dash at the 2010 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Hayward Field.
McCorory (Hampton, Va.) ran a season-best 50.69 to take her third title in the event – her first in the outdoor season. She also won the indoor 400-meter dash title in 2009 with a 51.54, before defending that title this past March, setting the American record with a 50.54.
Jessica Beard of Texas A&M ran a 51.02 to finish second. Auburn's Joanna Atkins, who posted the top preliminary time on Wednesday, finished third with a 52.01.
McCorory's title is also the fifth NCAA crown in program history; former Lady Pirate
Yvette Lewis won a pair of NCAA triple jump titles during her career, taking the indoor crown in 2006 before adding the outdoor title in 2007.
On the men's side, sophomore
Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) ran a 10.39 in the 100-meter dash finals to finish seventh. Jeff Demps of Florida won the event with a time of 9.96.
Dixon will likely earn All-American honors for his performance.
Through Friday's events, Texas A&M led the men's team standings with 36 points, while Oregon led the women's standings with 30 points.
