HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team will host its first regatta of the 2010-11 season on Saturday and Sunday, as the Edward Teach Memorial will take place at Strawberry Banks.
The regatta, named for the famous pirate known as Blackbeard, will be the first of two races hosted by the Pirates in the fall; the Henry Luce Regatta will also be held at Strawberry Banks on Oct. 30-31. It has also been announced that Hampton will host the MAISA/SAISA Spring Intersectional for the third straight year in late March.
The Pirates finished 11th this past weekend in the ODU Riley Cup with 200 points overall, scoring 73 in the A division and 127 in the B division.
Hampton's A division, comprised of
Andy Shoemaker and
Ian Guagliardo, finished eighth and recorded three finishes of fourth or better, including a best of second on Saturday. The B division, with newcomer Kimannee Simon and
Athnel George, came in 13
th in the division and finished as high as 11
th twice over the two days of competition.
Saturday's action took place under sunny skies and a light breeze that shifted throughout the day from the east-northeast. Cloudy skies and a light mist greeted Sunday's competition, with winds from southeast to east.
St. Mary's of Maryland won the overall title with 71 points.
Saturday's action will begin early in the morning and continue throughout the day, conditions permitting, making the Edward Teach Memorial a perfect lead-in to the Pirates' football game against North Carolina A&T at Armstrong Stadium at 6 p.m. Sunday's action will also start early in the morning and continue throughout the day.
