SAILING FINISHES THIRD IN WEBB INVITATIONAL

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team finished third in The Webb Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport University on Saturday and Sunday.

The Pirates finished with 43 points – 22 in Division A and 21 in Division B – while CNU swept the top two spots. Hampton and the University of Virginia both finished with the same numbers of points, though the Pirates won the tiebreaker.

William & Mary came in fifth with 46 points, while Salisbury (Md.) came in sixth.

Sophomore Simon Kimannee (St. Georges, Grenada) and freshman Albert Toledo (Istanbul, Turkey) raced in Division A, while sophomore Joshua Gopeesingh (San Juan, Puerto Rico) and junior Athnel George (Hyattsville, Md.) raced in Division B. Gopeesingh was in his first regatta as a skipper, and he and George won a race, while finishing in the top three in a few others.

Sailors were greeted by sunny skies and light breezes throughout the weekend.

The Pirates will return to action on Saturday and Sunday, when they host the Henry Luce regatta at Strawberry Banks, while part of the team will also head to Annapolis, Md. for the War Memorial.
