HAMPTON SAILING COMPLETES BUSY WEEKEND OF ACTION

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team competed in three separate regattas this past Saturday and Sunday, regattas ranging from Williamsburg, Va. to Maryland and all the way up to New York.

Freshman Giuditta Di Laghi (Albenga, Italy) was in Annapolis, Md. for the Faye Bennett MAISA Singlehanded – a regatta plagued by a lack of wind all weekend. Only two races were run over the course of the two days at the U.S. Naval Academy, meaning the regatta was not completed.

Di Laghi finished second and fourth in her two races, and she sat fourth overall in the standings. The top four finishers would've advanced to the ICSA Women's Singlehanded Nationals.

Meanwhile, senior Andy Shoemaker (Cincinnati, Ohio) and sophomore Simon Kimannee (St. Georges, Grenada) were in Kings Point, N.Y. for the MAISA Laser Qualifier. Winds were intermittent throughout the weekend, with only two races finishing on Saturday.

Shoemaker finished 11th, tallying 41 points and recording a best finish of eighth (twice). Kimannee had 69 points to come in 19th.

Five members of the sailing team were in Williamsburg, Va. this past weekend for the Colony Cup, a race in which the Pirates finished seventh with 136 points. Hampton had 90 points in the A Division, while the B Division tallied 46 points and had four third-place finishes.

William & Mary won the Colony Cup with 66 points.

The Pirates will return to action this Saturday and Sunday, when they head to St. Mary's City, Md. to compete in the South #1 Regatta.
