Results: Gotham Cup | Saturday at the Armory
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams had a strong weekend at the Armory Track & Field Center on Friday and Saturday, competing in both the New York City Gotham Cup and the Saturday at the Armory Open Meet.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates combined to win five event titles on Friday, before the Lady Pirates finished second and the Pirates came in third in the team standings on Saturday. The Lady Pirates ended Saturday with 113 points, while the Pirates had 87.
Senior
Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.) won the 60-meter dash on Friday, running a 6.64, while freshman
Edose Ibadin (Glendale, Md.) took the unseeded 800-meter run at the Gotham Cup with a time of 1:57.36.
The Pirates also won the 4x800-meter relay on Friday, as sophomore
Larry Ramirez (Pleasantville, N.J.), junior
Jaleel Rogers (Philadelphia, Pa.), junior
Xavier Fraction (Sewell, N.J.) and sophomore
Je'Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) combined to run a 7:42.47.
The Pirates also finished third in the 4x400-meter relay on Friday with a 3:18.31.
Freshman
Corrin Harris (Dumpass, Va.) jumped 6.63 meters to finish third in Friday's unseeded long jump, while also coming in tied for fourth in the unseeded triple jump with a mark of 13.41 meters.
Senior
Devan Clark (Lorton, Va.) tossed the shot put 13.71 meters to finish fourth in the unseeded event.
On the women's side, senior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the unseeded 800-meter run on Friday with a 2:12.87. The Lady Pirates' 4x400-meter relay team took gold, with sophomore
Emmy Fraenk (Hampton, Va.), freshman
Cassandra Jones (Norfolk, Va.), freshman
LeQuisha Parker (Silver Springs, Md.) and junior
Shantae Boney (District Heights, Md.) running a combined 3:47.17.
Sophomore
Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) came in third in both Friday's 60-meter dash (7.60) and 60-meter hurdles (8.70), while sophomore
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) ran a 2:13.26 to come in second in the seeded 800-meter run and sophomore
Nichelle Harris (Rahway, N.J.) ran a 5:18.04 to finish second in the unseeded mile.
Senior
Ermesha Fair (Chesapeake, Va.) and sophomore
Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) each tied for fourth in Friday's high jump at 1.60 meters.
Hampton's winning ways continued on Saturday, as the Pirates swept the four sprint events and the Lady Pirates picked up event titles in five different events.
Dixon took both the 60-meter dash (6.74) and the 200-meter dash (season-best 21.21) on Saturday, while Hutchison ran a season-best 1:03.46 to win the 500-meter dash and freshman
Chidi Okezie (Philadelphia, Pa.) took the 400-meter dash with a season-best 48.16.
Norman took the 60-meter hurdles title on Saturday after running an 8.56, while Parker ran a 24.54 to win the 200-meter dash and sophomore
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) ran a 1:14.71 to win the 500-meter dash.
The Lady Pirates also swept the 4x400-meter relay and 4x800-meter relay titles on Saturday; Fraenk and Parker teamed with juniors
Cearha Miller (Waldorf, Md.) and
Casaundra Bouldin (Bowie, Md.) to run a 3:47.50 in the 4x400, while Taylor, Robinson, Tate and
Malekah Holland ran a 9:20.48 in the 4x800.
Freshman
Brien Berry (Durham, N.C.) ran a 6.98 to finish second in Saturday's 60-meter dash, while also coming in second in the 200-meter dash with a 21.69. Fraction ran a 2:32.96 in the 1,000-meter run on Saturday to finish fifth, while Clark came in fifth in the weight throw with a distance of 14.57 meters.
Norman also ran a 7.60 in the 60-meter dash on Saturday to come in second, while Taylor ran a 56.41 to come in third in the 400-meter dash. Tate was fifth in Saturday's mile run with a 5:12.12.
Fair jumped 11.68 meters to come in third in the triple jump; Denmark was fifth at 11.65 meters.
Princeton won the men's team title on Saturday with 131 points, while Connecticut tallied 163 points to take the team championship on the women's side.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Saturday, when they head to Landover, Md. to compete in the Terrapin Invitational, while the Pirates are off until Jan. 27-28, when they travel to State College, Pa. for the Penn State National Invitational.
