STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The Hampton University men's and women's track & field teams competed in the Penn State National Invitational this past Friday and Saturday at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track at the Ashenfelter Multi-Sport Facility.
The Pirates picked up an event title, thanks to freshman
Brien Berry (Durham, N.C.) running a 21.68 to take the 200-meter dash. Senior
Reggie Dixon (Plainfield, N.J.), thanks to the 6.60 he turned in during the preliminary heats of the 60-meter dash, qualified for the NCAA Championships in March.
Dixon also ran a season-best 21.15 to come in second in the 200-meter dash invitational.
Sophomore
Je'Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) turned in a 48.27 in the 400-meter dash to come in second, while freshman
Mohamed Labor-Koroma (Chantilly, Va.) came in third in the 500-meter dash with a 1:04.42.
Freshman
Edose Ibadin (Glendale, Md.) ran a 1:04.63 to come in fourth.
The Pirates finished second in the 4x800-meter relay invitational, thanks to a season-best time of 7:40.23, while also running a school-record 10:05.91 to finish fourth in the distance medley relay.
Sophomore
Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) paced the Lady Pirates over the weekend, coming in third in both the 60-meter dash (season-best 7.49) and 200-meter dash (season-best 24.45). She also tied her season-best in the semifinals of the 60-meter hurdles with an 8.56.
The Lady Pirates came in second in the 4x400-meter relay with a season-best 3:43.60.
Senior
Claudia Calder (Kingston, Jamaica) tallied a season-best 3,554 points to finish third in the women's pentathlon, winning the final event – the 800-meter run – with a time of 2:18.33.
Sophomore
Teiara Denmark (Virginia Beach, Va.) jumped a season-best 5.80 meters to finish fourth in the long jump, while senior
Ermesha Fair (Chesapeake, Va.) came in sixth in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 11.92 meters.
Sophomore
Cydney Robinson (Portsmouth, Va.) ran a 2:14.92 to finish sixth in the 800-meter run. Sophomore
Alaine Tate (Queens, N.Y.) ran in the 800-meter run invitational, turning in a season-best 2:10.65 -- just .12 off her school record set last season -- to finish eighth.
The Pirates and Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday and Saturday, when they head to New York, N.Y. to compete in the Armory New Balance Collegiate Invitational; select Lady Pirates will also be in Newport News, Va. on Saturday for the Vince Brown Invitational hosted by Christopher Newport.
