DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University men's and women's golf teams opened the spring 2012 campaign on Tuesday and Wednesday, competing in the Gary Freeman Spring Invitational hosted by Bethune-Cookman at LPGA International.
The Lady Pirates finished fifth in the women's team standings with a two-round 677 (331-346), while the Pirates came in 11th in the men's standings with a three-round score of 1,020 (337-338-345).
Senior
Dionne West (Springdale, Md.) paced the Lady Pirates with a 168 (83-85) to finish tied for 11th, while junior
Kayla Williams (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and senior
Iman Ellis (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) each came in tied for 14th.
Williams went 82-87 to total 169 strokes, while Ellis shot 85-84.
Junior
Nicole West (Springdale, Md.) shot a 171 (81-90) to come in tied for 19th, while freshman
Mikea Granberry came in 28th after shooting a 184 (93-91).
Senior
Geoffrey Napper (Bowie, Md.) paced the Pirates with a 248 (84-83-79) to finish 46th, while senior
Javier Lopez (Chicago, Ill.)came in 48th with a 251 (86-80-85). Freshman
Mark Irwin shot a 270 (90-91-89) to come in 54th.
Freshman
Tyler Davis and junior
Curtis Fearrington (Attica, N.Y.) each only completed two of the three rounds.
Laval University won the men's team title with an 873 (300-285-288), while Florida Atlantic's Clint Wilhelm took the individual medal after shooting a 212 (72-67-73).
The Pirates will return to action on March 16-18, when the travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to compete in the Florida A&M Invitational, while the Lady Pirates will be in Williamsburg, Va. on March 18-20 for the William & Mary Invitational.
