NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team finished second in the Ice-Free Regatta hosted by Christopher Newport University on Saturday and Sunday.
The Pirates finished with 58 points, nine points behind winner CNU.
Sophomores
Simon Kimannee (St. Georges, Grenada) and
Joshua Gopeesingh (San Juan, Puerto Rico) sailed in the A Division over the weekend, while freshman
Giuditta Di Laghi (Albenga, Italy) and Jelani McCarthy raced in the B Division.
The six teams in attendance faced abundant sunshine and light winds throughout the weekend as they competed on the James River.
The Pirates will return to action this Saturday and Sunday, when they head to Annapolis, Md. to compete in the Truxton Umsted Regatta hosted by the U.S. Naval Academy; it is one of the most important inter-conference regattas on the East Coast, boasting a field on 18 teams.
