HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University sailing team finished fifth in the MAISA/SAISA Intersectional Regatta on Saturday and Sunday at Strawberry Banks.
The Pirates finished with 67 points.
Hampton scored 22 points in Division A, thanks to three second-place finishes and a third-place effort from
Giuditta Di Laghi, Jelani McCarthy and
Albert Toledo. The Pirates finished third overall in the A Division.
The Pirates also tallied 45 points in the B Division, with
Joshua Gopeesingh and Cortnae Justice recording a best finish of fifth.
Conditions on Saturday only allowed for one race to be run in Division A, but Sunday provided better winds (around 7-11 knots), which allowed for more racing.
St. Mary's won the regatta with 26 points, finishing eight points better than second-place Old Dominion.
The Pirates will return to action on Saturday and Sunday, when they head to Williamsburg, Va. for the South Spring Qualifier – an event which sets part of the field for the America Trophy (April 14-15 in Geneva, N.Y.).
Hampton has qualified for the America Trophy in each of the last two seasons.
