HAMPTON GOLF COMPETES IN 2012 MEAC SHOWCASE

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Hampton University men's and women's golf teams competed in the 2012 MEAC Showcase hosted by Savannah State University on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at the Crosswinds Golf Club.

The Lady Pirates finished second in the women's team standings with a two-round score of 630 (321-309), while the Pirates finished sixth in the men's team standings after shooting a 1,031 (338-335-358) over three rounds.

Junior Nicole West (Springdale, Md.) led the Lady Pirate, shooting a 10-over 154 (80-74) to come in second; her second-round 74 was not just the team's low round of the tournament, but the Lady Pirates' low round of the 2011-12 season.

Sophomore Maria Stewart (Newport News, Va.) came in tied for fourth after firing a 13-over 157 (80-77), while senior Iman Ellis (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) finished sixth with a 14-over 158 (82-76). Junior Kayla Williams (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) shot a 17-over 161 (79-82) to come in eighth, giving the Lady Pirates four players in the top 10.

Freshman Crystal Smitherman shot a 55-over 199 (100-96) to come in 13th.

Junior Curtis Fearrington (Attica, N.Y.) led the Pirates, finishing 19th after shooting a 28-over 244 (76-85-83), while senior Geoffrey Napper (Bowie, Md.) shot a 36-over 252 (84-79-89) to come in a tie for 22nd.

Fearrington's first-round 76 was the team's low round of the tournament.

Freshman Mark Irwin fired a 53-over 269 (94-86-89) to come in 25th, while freshman Tyler Davis finished 26th with a 54-over 270 (84-85-101) and Sean Moore tied for 27th after firing a 75-over 291 (101-93-97).

Bethune-Cookman swept both team titles. Matthew McKnight (72-74-68=214, -2) won the men' individual title, while Estefania Acosta (76-71=147, +3) took the women's individual medal.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on April 27-29, when they head to Atlanta, Ga. for the Women in Golf Foundation Tournament, while the Pirates are off until May 10-13, when they head to Port St. Lucie, Fla. for the PGA Minority Collegiate Championship.
