LANDOVER, Md. – For the third year in a row, the Hampton University women's track & field team won the 2013 MEAC Indoor Track & Field Championships, which were held Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Prince George's Sports & Learning Complex.
The Lady Pirates tallied 140.5 points in the process of picking up their 10th indoor title in 11 years. Maryland Eastern Shore came in second with 131 points, while Morgan State finished a distant third with 64.5 total points.
Director of Track & Field
Maurice Pierce was named the meet's Most Outstanding Coach.
“Our track team came through today, because we were down yesterday in points and my hat goes off to my coaching staff and to all of my ladies,” Pierce said. “They did an outstanding job fighting today.”
The Pirates finished second in the men's standings with 85 points. Norfolk State won its eighth straight indoor title with 152.5 points.
Junior
Breana Norman (Virginia Beach, Va.) won the 60-meter hurdles title with an 8.42, while also running a 7.46 in the 60-meter dash to tie her season best and come in second.
Senior
Benita Taylor (Philadelphia, Pa.) won the 800-meter run with a 2:09.00, while sophomore
Le'Quisha Parker (Silver Springs, Md.) took the 200-meter dash title with a time of 24.17. Taylor and Parker were also on the 4x400-meter relay team that took gold with a 3:42.18.
Senior
Shantae Boney (District Heights, Md.) and junior
Malekah Holland (Brooklyn, N.Y.) were also on that squad.
Boney also came in second in the pentathlon with a season-high 3,497 points.
Freshman
Trey Holloway (Chesapeake, Va.) set a new MEAC record in winning the 60-meter hurdles, running a season- and personal-best 7.84. That time also broke the school record set by Predist Walker in 2010.
Junior
Je'Von Hutchison (Boynton, Fla.) won the men's 800-meter run with a 1:52.69, while also coming in third in the 400-meter dash with a 49.06. Sophomore
Edose Ibadin (Glendale, Md.) came in second in that race after turning in a time of 1:52.76.
Sophomores
Sulaiman Fareed (Richmond, Va.) and
Javan Gray (Springfield, Ore.) finished second and third, respectively, in the shot put. Fareed threw the shot put 16.09 meters (52 feet, 9.5 inches), while Gray recorded a mark of 15.32 meters (50 feet, 3.25 inches).
Fareed's mark was a season-best.
Sophomore
Mohamed Labor-Koroma (Chantilly, Va.) came in second in the heptathlon with a season-high 4,489 points.
The top three finishers in every event earned All-MEAC honors; event winners were named First Team, while runners-up were named Second Team, and those who finished in third place earned Third Team All-MEAC honors.
